Salmonberry - slightly sweet, delicate & refreshing
It’s the climate. The South Coast of Oregon produces a bounty of berries. Oregon’s coastal moderate temperatures and ample rainfall create ideal conditions for growing delicious orbs of fruit as well as a providing a pleasant environment in which live and play. If you decide to purchase real estate in Coastal Oregon and relocate, berry-picking is a favorite ol’time past-time for many residents – spring, summer and fall.
Salmonberries – a species native to the west coast usually found in moist forest and stream margins forming large thickets of bushes 1-4 meters in height and can be located along many sections of the Oregon Coast Trail.
Lesser known to most folks, this berry shares the same fruit-structure as a raspberry, only slightly larger, ripening from mid-June to late-July into a bright, orange-gold color sometimes tinged with red.
Historically, these were an important food for indigenous peoples, often incorporated into pemmican or eaten with half-dried salmon roe. The flavor is subtle, slightly sweet and refreshing— good eaten raw or processed into jam, candy, jelly and wine.
Blackberries - plentiful and grow almost everywhere on Oregon’s south coast! Several area restaurants feature their own versions of lip-smacking blackberry cobbler. Pick ‘em until you drop. They’re good, sweet nectar producers for a wide variety of uses.
The blackberry is also high in nutritional value containing dietary fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, B vitamin and the essential mineral manganese. This humble berry also packs a powerful punch of antioxidant strength.
Huckleberries are easily found, both bright red through dark purple-blue varieties, ranging from tart to sweet in taste—similar to blueberries— ripening in mid-to-late summer or later at higher elevations.
Many mammals enjoy these berries, especially bears. Humans love ‘em to make luscious pies and jams, and the 4-6 ft. bushes can be used in coastal horticulture to create native-plant gardens and landscapes.
Lastly, the familiar blueberry is easy to cultivate here, and many Oregon Blueberry farms sell them in volume or offer U-Pick days for those inclined to spend a leisurely day plucking their own.
